Colitis And Crohn's Disease Are Pains In The Butt

John Gray

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease are invisible conditions.

On the outside, someone may look completely healthy and eat all the right foods. But on the inside, Crohn's and colitis victims feel constant anguish, like severe stomach pain, extreme fatigue, weight loss, malnutrition and the embarrassing bathroom needs, constantly. The worst part is that their pain isn't limited to that one area on their body. It radiates all over and causes side effects and emotional distress.

There are currently more than 1.5 million Americans that suffer from an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in your digestive tract and includes both Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Crohn's and colitis are not only physically and emotionally painful, but also financially taxing. It is estimated that the direct cost of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis is estimated to be over $6 billion annually. In 2011, Congress recognized the physical, emotional, and financial turmoil caused by Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and declared December 1-7 as Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week.

Inflammation in the gut is always associated with inflammation in the brain. Irritable bowel syndrome includes symptoms of chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and diarrhea or constipation. This is usually accompanied by an overgrowth of candida in the gut. Processed or packaged foods often contain a number of additives, such as artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, and emulsifiers (detergent-like molecules). Each of these additives has the potential to disrupt your health. For example, emulsifiers are linked to metabolic issues as well as inflammatory diseases. It is also known that food additives may be one of the culprits in the breakdown of the mucosal lining of the gut. In addition to food additives, air pollution is now being linked to the breakdown of a healthy digestive tract. Air pollution particles can disrupt the barrier by making the guy more permeable to unhealthy bacteria. All of these disruptions to the healthy gut lead to inflammation in the digestive tract.
