What is Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression?

John Gray

About 2.6 percent of American adults -- nearly 6 million people -- have bipolar disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). But the disease, characterized by significant and severe mood changes, is still dangerously misunderstood.

Bipolar disorder is far different from the normal ups and downs of everyday life. The mood swings in someone with bipolar disorder, sometimes also called manic depression, can damage relationships and hurt job performance. It has been estimated that anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of people with bipolar disorder attempt suicide at least once.

Good morning ;-) Dr Gray talks about taking hot baths with an artic cap on the head to reduce inflammation of the brain and help to flush out toxins..can someone tell me where to get this artic cap or what it is exactly? My 44 daughter is in recovery and naturally gravitates to taking many hot baths a day and saunas. She also finds the inversion table very soothing. Anyway we want very much to add the artic cap to her regimen as i think it would help. She has added the lithuim oritate to her regimen. Please someone tell me more about the artic cap ...thanks much! ...

Dear Dr. Gray, I am very excited about the idea of treating my Bipolar disorder naturally. I am feeling very positive results from Lithium Orotate so far and I have decreased my anti-depressant from 150mg to 100mg the first week and have now decreased it to 75mg, 2 days of second week. I am drinking protein shakes and taking enzymes and using coconut oil. I got some Aloe Vera Juice two days ago and I have tried one cleansing bath. I see my Dr. in two days and I need to set a goal to get off three prescriptions. I do have some concerns of feeling too good perhaps but I am having intervals of that and then feeling tired. I have been on medicine for this problem for most of 16-17 years. I have also been improving my diet greatly for the last 3 years and take Omega 3's or EFA and high quality vitamins. Anyway, I am just wondering what you suggest for me to make a plan with my Doctor? I'm feeling a bit alone with all this! Thank you very much for the hope of having a better life!...

Dr Gray - My husband was diagnosed with Bi Polar a year ago, although I am sure he has been his whole life. He had his first major bout of depression March of 2014 and it changed both of our lives. I did not know if my husband would ever return to being the same person. We agreed he had to quit his high profile stressful job of 10+ years and start working for himself and for about a year after that he did quite well. I did start to notice when he became manic again and warned him he was going to do the same thing if he didn't take care of himself. He absolutely refuses to take medication because he feels they don't work and I would like to say, I probably would agree with him for the most part,,however, to get him level, he required the Respiridon they prescribed to him. He did crash again last week, and it was worse than the first time. He wanted to commit suicide and I feel if I hadn't been there, he would have attempted it. I did get him to take his prescription after much arguing, and he slept for around 36 hours. I have been quietly keeping him medicated because I was afraid of him becoming manic and sever depression again. I came across your YouTube video and was impressed and I believe in natural therapy and I know he will accept it to. I would like some advice on exactly what to purchase and I will place my order immediately. I am scared that my husband will continue to crash and I am trying my best to help him become responsible for his health and I will fully support him. Anything you could give me as a list of monthly and amounts for him to take would be most appreciated. Thank you. Yvonne Martinez ...

Lithium Orotate comes in 150 mg, 200 capsule bottle - which is very affordable. However, you are supposed to take 25 mgs. I have to cut the pill into 4 pieces?

Dear Dr Gray, I am so sorry to hear about your brother, I just looked at you video about stress in relationships, and saw all the different recommendations in diet, physical, emotional remedies, and I was so impressed and after seeing this I understand why you did so much research. I am a so called bi=polar survivor, and when I was first diagnosed 3.5 years ago, it was after a nervous breakdown, first job was they prescribed me so many medications, I could not take any medications, lithium was awful, I never heard of lithium oritate. my mind was so messed up after 4 months, and I don't know how I managed. I can tell you it is a miracle I did not commit suicide, and I can tell you that you brother did that because there was no choice. I can never explain how sick the mind can get. But, I was lucky, I researched and researched and I went to the doctors, told them I was weaning off the medications, they told me I was crazy and I needed the rest of my life. I proved them wrong, I had a supportive boyfriend who helped, I started taking amino acids, heavy doses, I took blood test, I was low in everything, so I started feeding my body. I went to therapist, but mostly what helped me along with feeding my body with good food, amino acids, super foods, raw food powders, eating lots of beans to balance sugar levels, was EMDR. I actually did not have bi=polar but PTSD. It took me 3 years to heal but I did. I have a new respect for people with mental illness. my sister has been on bi-polar for 11 years, she is still sick. I am better. Thank you so much for your information. I have read so many of your books over the years. God Bless, Elizabeth ...
