Natural Choices for Prostate Health

advice: wellness john gray

Men, you know the scenario. Every night, you go to bed wondering when and how often you’re going to have to get up to use the bathroom. You’re tired from the disrupted sleep, and your testosterone is taking a nosedive.

What if I told you that it doesn’t have to be this way? That as you age and turn 50+, you can have a healthy prostate that allows your hormones (and bladder!) to function as they’re meant to?

The following post shares how you can sleep the whole night through and have the prostate of a man half your age. Sleep tight!

The State of the Prostate

The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland that wraps around the urethra. It’s part of a man’s reproductive system. One of its main jobs is to add fluid to sperm.

About 200,000 American men will discover they have prostate cancer this year. Prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in men, behind skin cancer. 1 out of 4 American men will have prostate cancer by the time they're 50. That's 30 percent. Almost 40,000 American men will die from prostate cancer this year.

Most doctors recommend surgery, radiation, hormonal therapy, or other treatments that have limited effectiveness and cause major side effects — including impotence — for most patients. Besides seriously diminishing a person's quality of life, 35 percent of the men that have received these treatments find themselves dealing with the return of the disease within just five years.

What Is an Enlarged Prostate?

An enlarged prostate is medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition eventually affects at least 80% of men and is most common after age 50.

When the prostate is enlarged, the walnut-sized prostate gland grows and presses on the urethra (the outflow tract from the bladder). This causes a weakened urine stream and the feeling of having to urinate frequently and urgently — especially at night.

The BPH Cycle

The abnormal growth of the prostate gland and all the problems associated with that may be triggered by the presence of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is produced in the body by the male hormone testosterone and an enzyme.

Ironically, or rather sadly, the symptoms of BPH cause an increase in DHT production which, in turn, causes the BPH symptoms to get worse and increase DHT production even more.

This is because when you suffer from BPH, you usually wake up often in the night to urinate. These interruptions break the hormone cycle that helps you naturally rebuild your testosterone and maintain a natural prostate gland. When natural testosterone production is down, DHT increases, and it causes an enlarged prostate. As this cycle continues, the symptoms get worse until you have to take action.

Herbal vs. Medical Treatments for BPH

1 out of 3 men is treated for BPH with surgery or, more commonly, prescription drugs like Flomax or Proscar. However, growing research suggests that some symptoms may be treated as effectively with over-the-counter herbal remedies.

Besides being less expensive than medications or surgery, there are no reported side effects associated with natural treatments. Even more, there are findings that these herbal remedies may help prevent prostate cancer.

In the past, the role of these herbal remedies has been overlooked by many. But there is now enough laboratory and clinical evidence to recommend their use in many patients with BPH and to maintain good overall prostate health.

Herbal therapy should be the first choice for fighting prostate problems and keeping the prostate healthy. Herbs can greatly reduce the size of an enlarged prostate — and even prevent one — without the harmful side effects that come with other options. Before trying any new supplements, check with a natural health practitioner in your area to learn which supplements will be right for you.
